Why Model Trains?

Why Model Trains Video

The Story Behind the Video

Note: I used AI to help turn the transcript of my latest video into this blog post. The words and ideas are mine—I just got a little help organizing them and cutting out the fluff.

Why Model Trains?

At some point, someone is going to ask you, “So… why model trains?” And when they do, what are you going to say?

For me, that question came up recently when I shared my website with a friend I used to do photography with. He called me and asked straight out, “Why model trains?” And honestly, I think every one of us in the hobby will be asked that at some point.

The simple answer? It’s fun. It’s relaxing. It’s a hobby that keeps the mind and hands busy. But for me, it goes deeper than that. Model railroading pulls together nearly all the skills and interests I’ve developed over the years—into one creative outlet.

A Creator’s Playground

I like to think of myself as a Creator Alchemist. I enjoy solving problems, learning new skills, and building things from scratch. Model railroading lets me do all of that—without needing to split time across different hobbies. It’s all here.

Take 3D design and printing. I love being able to imagine an object, design it, and then hold it in my hands as a miniature model. There’s always something to troubleshoot, iterate on, or improve—which keeps it interesting.

Then there’s the electronics side. I’ve been into computers most of my life. It’s how I make a living. So when I get to play with DCC systems or microcontrollers for lighting effects and automation, it feels like second nature. Writing code for something as niche as a flickering fire effect might sound random, but for me, it’s deeply satisfying.

Beyond the Layout

Photography’s another piece of the puzzle. I’ve sold gear over the years and scaled back a bit during COVID, but I’m bringing it back—especially for product photography. It’s a new challenge: how to light and shoot tiny objects with gear that wasn’t exactly designed for the job.

And then, of course, there’s the people. Yes, in any group you’ll find a few who act like they’re always right, but most folks I’ve met in the model railroading world are genuinely friendly, helpful, and excited to share knowledge. That sense of community is real.

So… Why Model Trains?

Because it brings everything together. Design, electronics, photography, storytelling, and problem-solving. It’s a place where I can create, iterate, and explore—while having something tangible to show for it.

I’d love to hear your reasons too. What do you enjoy most about the hobby? Drop a comment or connect with me through the newsletter.

And if you’re curious about what I’ve been working on lately—like my Kinston & Neuse River Railroad project (aka KNR 90)—you’ll find more about that on the blog. I’ve been prototyping ditch lights, wiring up the decoder, and even reprinting the trucks with roller bearings to match modern upgrades.

One video a week—that’s the goal. Let’s see where this journey goes.
