Watch Along: Grab Iron Replacement on My Florida East Coast 1200
How I Install Grab Irons Without Damaging the Model
Today, I’m working on the Florida East Coast 1200, adding new grab irons as part of its upgrade process. These small details are some of the most common parts to break off over time, so I’m using 3D-printed replacements and a glue method that makes future repairs easier. Here’s how I install them and why I do it this way.
Tools and Materials
For this job, I use:
- A number 70 drill bit
- Tweezers
- A micro brush
- Canopy glue (or regular white glue)
I choose canopy glue because it holds the parts firmly but can be removed without damaging the plastic. Unlike CA glue, it doesn’t chemically bond the pieces together, so repairs down the road are simpler.
Preparing the Holes
First, I drill out the old glue or broken pieces using the number 70 bit. Even if you’re replacing existing grab irons, you’ll want to clear the holes so the new parts fit cleanly. A few twists with the drill is usually all it takes.
Installing the Grab Irons
Using tweezers, I place the grab iron into the drilled holes. Then, with the shell turned inside out, I apply glue from the inside using the micro brush. This keeps glue off the exterior and gives a cleaner finish. Once the glue is in place, I make sure the grab iron arms are seated fully in the holes.
Working in Sections
Patience is important here. Canopy glue takes longer to dry, so I let each set of grab irons sit before moving on. This prevents them from shifting or sticking to the work surface.
What’s Next
With the rear grab irons installed, the next step will be adding the side rails. This is part of the overall upgrade that includes roller bearing side trucks, giving the locomotive a rebuilt, modernized look.
End of Train
That wraps up this step of the upgrade. I’d like to hear how you approach grab iron installs—do you go for a permanent bond or keep them removable like I do? And if you want to follow along with future projects, tips, and behind-the-scenes updates, sign up for the newsletter below.
