Watch Along: Not All White LEDs Are Equal
Warm White or Cool White? Choosing the Right LEDs for Your Layout
When you’re just starting out with model building, it’s easy to overlook how much lighting affects the feel of your layout. But the truth is, the color of your LEDs can make the difference between a scene that feels alive and one that feels a little off. In this post, I’ll share why white LEDs aren’t all created equally—and how to pick the right ones for the atmosphere you want.
Lighting is one of those details that can quietly transform a layout from good to unforgettable. But here’s something a lot of new model builders don’t realize: not all white LEDs are the same—and the difference goes way beyond the label on the package.
I’ve spent a lot of time experimenting with LEDs because I’m a bit of a stickler when it comes to creating the right feeling. Some LEDs cast a bright, bluish glow that feels almost like a crisp winter morning. Others lean warm and mellow, like the soft light from an old incandescent bulb. That difference comes down to color temperature.
Warm white LEDs usually fall around 2700–3000 Kelvin, giving off that inviting golden tone you see in older buildings and classic locomotives. Cool white LEDs can be up in the 5000–6000 Kelvin range, producing a sharper, blue-tinted light that looks more modern. If you’ve walked through a neighborhood lately and noticed those stark, almost bluish street lamps replacing the old ones—same idea.
Personally, I gravitate toward warm white. There’s just something about it that feels comforting, almost like coming home to a bowl of chili on a cold day. But there’s no right or wrong choice. It depends on what story you want your layout to tell. Are you modeling a vintage diesel engine with decades of history behind it? Or a sleek contemporary scene bathed in bright daylight?
Next time you’re picking out LEDs for a project, pause for a moment to think about how you want your models to feel. Even a subtle shift in color temperature can change the entire mood.
Experiment, trust your eye, and let your personal style lead the way. Because at the end of the day, this hobby is about creating something that feels right to you.
Thanks for reading, and here’s to layouts that feel as good as they look.
