Model railroading isn’t just about running trains—it’s about bringing history to life, capturing the essence of real-world locomotives in miniature form. In this multi-part series, I’m taking a Proto 2000 SW900 and transforming it into Kinston Railroad KNR 90, a locomotive that never came off a factory assembly line but has a story worth telling.
This project goes beyond a simple repaint. I’ll be stripping the factory paint, rebuilding the locomotive with new details, repainting it in KNR 90’s custom livery, and upgrading it with DCC for modern operations. Along the way, I’ll share techniques for working with older Proto 2000 models, airbrushing and weathering, and integrating digital controls for better realism and performance.
What to Expect in This Series
Each post in this series will focus on a different phase of the restoration:
- History & Inspiration – A look at the Kinston Railroad and why KNR 90 is the perfect subject for this build.
- Stripping the Paint – The best methods for removing factory paint without damaging details.
- Rebuilding & Detailing – Modifying and refining the model for better accuracy.
- Repainting & Decals – Applying a fresh coat of paint and adding authentic lettering.
- DCC & Electronics – Upgrading the locomotive for modern control and lighting.
- Weathering & Final Touches – Giving the locomotive a realistic, well-used appearance.
This series isn’t just about KNR 90—it’s about the craft of model railroading, the joy of customization, and the satisfaction of seeing a unique locomotive take shape. Whether you’re a seasoned modeler or just getting into custom builds, I hope this series gives you some inspiration and practical techniques for your own projects.
What’s Next?
In the next post, I’ll start with a deep dive into the history of the EMD SW900, the real-world prototype behind this model. I’ll also explore the background of KNR 90 and the Kinston Railroad, setting the stage for this restoration. Understanding the history behind a locomotive adds another layer of appreciation to the process, making the build more than just a technical project—it becomes a way to honor the legacy of railroads and their role in shaping industries and communities.
Stay tuned as we begin this exciting transformation!
