Restoring & Upgrading a Proto 2000 SW900 – The KNR 90 Rebuild : Overview

Model railroading isn’t just about running trains—it’s about bringing history to life, capturing the essence of real-world locomotives in miniature form. In this multi-part series, I’m taking a Proto 2000 SW900 and transforming it into Kinston Railroad KNR 90, a locomotive that never came off a factory assembly line but has a story worth telling.

This project goes beyond a simple repaint. I’ll be stripping the factory paint, rebuilding the locomotive with new details, repainting it in KNR 90’s custom livery, and upgrading it with DCC for modern operations. Along the way, I’ll share techniques for working with older Proto 2000 models, airbrushing and weathering, and integrating digital controls for better realism and performance.
